Leeds-West Riding Umpires Association

NEWSLETTER 2006

25 September 2006

Another season has just finished with happy memories of your umpiring experiences at enjoyable and competitive matches. Congratulations to all who officiated at finals and inter league games you represented our Association in a smart and efficient manner. The season had a typical mixed bag of weather starting with a very poor April and May with rain and soft wickets and ending with same in September but in the middle we had some scorching days when even 2 drinks intervals were not enough for many players. I wonder how many of them considered that umpires stand for 88 overs in the hot sun not just one innings?

UMPIRES APPOINTMENTS

Merlin and his assistant (Gordon and Tony) managed to staff as many matches as possible and thank all members for their support and cooperation. In August Gordon returned from his short break in Hull and was soon taking over from his assistant. His health is good and he actually umpired a Festival match as well as attend the Fun Day at Nostell on 10th September. It is good to see Gordon back at cricket grounds.

END SEASON MEETING

The meeting was held Tuesday 19th September and members present had a lively discussion on the season.
Paul Scott indicated he would not seek re-election as Secretary due to his recent removal to South Yorkshire (he will not be allowed to transfer "on residential grounds"!!!)

HEPWORTH RAFFLE

The Treasure announced that the 50% proceeds of the sale of ticket would benefit the Association by approximately £50. Thanks to all members who sold tickets.

Bernard Simpson

Whilst he did not attend the End of Season Meeting due to holidays I can report that he was at the Clubs meeting on Thursday. It was good to see him again and it is pleasing to everyone to know that Bernard is continuing his convalescence in a very encouraging way.

DR JACKSON'S CANCER FUND

Gordon thanks all umpires who generously gave their time to umpire the cricket knockout and fund raising events at Nostell on 20th August. Over £800 was raised which is a tremendous effort and great reward to those who organised the day.
