NEWSLETTER
April 2006

It is now less than 2 weeks away from the start of the cricket season. Many of our members attended the Refresher Course run in March at Barnbow Social Club and we are pleased to welcome 2 new members Colin Raymond and Ahmed Kayat. For those not able to attend there is a course handout available from Dave Charlston.

There are no changes in the MCC Rules of Cricket this year and if anyone else (4 members at the Refresher Course have already ordered a copy), wants the latest update of 2003 version please contact Paul Scott.

UMPIRES APPOINTMENTS

Gordon and Tony will once again be handling this and trying to meet the requests of members whilst at the same time trying to staff as many matches as possible. If members know of anyone who is interested to help out even if that is only one match please contact Gordon firstly. Try to give as much notice as possible for dates when you cannot umpire.

MATCH DAY GUIDELINES FOR UMPIRES

The league management is aware of the importance of umpires in the "match day reporting procedure".
The League Management Committee must ensure that matches are played in accordance with "league and cup rules" and would like the assistance of umpires with the implementation of the following: -

1. The toss must be made not later than 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start (Rule 5.1)
2. Any team (minimum 8 players) not ready to start 15 minutes before the scheduled start shall forfeit the toss (Rule 5.2)
12. League approved match ball and second (spare) MUST be in the hands of the umpire before the toss (Rule 5.1)
13. Team Sheets (green copy for umpires) must be exchanged prior to the toss (Rule 5.1). Umpires must ensure that the ages are clearly shown for junior players. Minimum permitted age is 11 as at 1 September 2005 (Rule 3.3)
14. Please make sure that the Result Card (yellow) is completed in full after each match. Enter the starting and finishing time of each innings, the score and the points earned by each team. It is very important to give accurate marks for the pitch and appearance.
· The pitch appearance
· The playing characteristics using guidelines shown on card and on page 98 of handbook. An explanation must be given for marks below 70% in Division One and 60% in Divisions 2 & 3.
Report details of any lost time due to EMERGENCIES ONLY. Include such as injuries, rain or exceptional weather causing play to be stopped. Time lost due to looking for lost balls, slow changes after each over, changes in field setting or drinks breaks are not classified as EMERGENCIES
15. After the match complete the Result Card with any comments, enter the sportsmanship mark for both teams:-
For guidance in arriving at a sportsmanship mark it is recommended you start the match with a mark of 5 and then add or subtract as the match proceeds and acts of sportsmanship or bad sportsmanship occurs.
16. Report on the condition of the balls used:
In the space after "Home" and "Away" enter W if wet or D if dry and indicate the type of ball, then a tick or a cross against each of the conditions and enter the number of overs used.
17. Note in the space any comments about the match and any misbehaviour during match or otherwise.
18. Remind both captains to give you the "white copy" of the team sheet with their completed sportsmanship award and the visiting captain to give you the completed "green" ground marking card. Put these with the result card in the envelope provided and post at the first opportunity.
